Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president. The endorsement was made public in a video released on Friday.
Barack Obama expressed his support in a phone call with Harris, joined by Michelle Obama. “Michelle and I couldn’t be prouder to endorse you and to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the Oval Office,” he said.
Harris was deeply grateful for their support. “Oh my goodness. Michelle, Barack, this means so much to me. I’m looking forward to doing this with the two of you, Doug and I both. And getting out there, being on the road,” she responded.
She also emphasized the importance of their friendship, adding, “The words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given over all these years mean more than I can express, so thank you both. It means so much. And we’re gonna have some fun with this too, aren’t we?”

Michelle Obama shared her pride in Harris, anticipating a historic election. “I can’t have this phone call without saying to my girl, Kamala, I am proud of you. This is going to be historic,” she said.
In their joint statement, the Obamas praised Harris for her achievements and qualities. “But Kamala has more than a resume,” the statement read. “She has the vision, the character, and the strength that this critical moment demands. There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people.”
The statement added, “At a time when the stakes have never been higher, she gives us all reason to hope.”
Barack Obama and Kamala Harris have maintained regular contact over the years, with Obama serving as a mentor and advisor. Despite not endorsing Harris immediately after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek reelection, Obama has shown confidence in the Democratic Party’s process to select a nominee.

Obama’s statement emphasized the importance of a fair selection process, echoing his approach during the 2020 Democratic primary. He stressed the need for unity within the party and focused on Biden’s contributions before his decision not to run for a second term.
Previously, Obama supported Biden’s reelection efforts, participating in fundraisers and encouraging donations. However, the focus has now shifted to Harris as the presumptive Democratic nominee.
The Democratic Party has been quick to adopt rules for nominating Harris, with official voting set to begin on August 1.
The Democratic convention, scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago, will include ceremonial votes for president and vice president. While the presidential vote will be conducted as a roll call, the vice-presidential vote is expected to be a voice vote.
Harris has yet to select a running mate. Her team is conducting an accelerated search, aiming to announce a nominee before August 7.
